Vibration isolation of OHLA Hotel Barcelona

Building isolation system retrofitted to existing steel columns.

The architect Daniel Isern, from Isern Associats, with the collaboration of NOLAC Enginyers (Structural Design and Calculation Consultants), AV Enginyers (acoustic consultants) and Albert Bordera (Executive Director of the work) were commissioned to convert the old building of the Catalan Land Institute into a five-star Hotel of the OHLA Boutique Hotels chain, with all its amenities and comfort.

Challenge

The problem posed by this old office building, for its conversion into a high standing hotel, is that underneath railroad tunnel created vibration immission levels inside, which made it unfeasible for residential use. GERB immediately started to work together with the architectural and technical team of this project, to develop a solution to achieve the required levels of comfort.

Technical Facts:

Structure: reinforced concrete and steel.

Expected load: 46,000 kN

Vibration source: railroad tunnel

System frequency: 3.5 Hz

Solution

By retrofitting 39 GP series prestressable spring elements and 34 GPN series prestressable spring elements, we were able to reduce the negative effects of vibrations and secondary noise and achieve the degree of comfort required by the use of the building.
